Who doesn’t love going on vacation? I know how exhilarating it can be to practice my Spanish-speaking skills in a real-world context. I love to travel safely – I never leave home without medical travel insurance – and I know the thrill of flashing my passport before boarding a plane to a fabulous Latin destination.
The following tips will help you get ready for your trip and ensure you get the most out of your vacation, no matter where you happen to go.
1. Apply for a passport ASAP
This is extremely important: as soon as you know you will be leaving the country you should apply for a passport. You will not get your passport the week after you apply for it. For most applicants there is a two-to-three month waiting period; rush orders are available but will cost more and still require a wait. Give yourself a two-month buffer when applying or renewing a passport.
2. Find Out If You Need a Visa
Short stays only require a passport but longer stays (let’s say over a month) will require a Visa. If you are planning an extended staycation make sure to apply for and receive the proper Visa before leaving the country to ensure there are no problems in customs. Each country has different standards: make sure to contact the proper authorities to get correct information.
3. Buy Your Plane Tickets Early
The phrase ‘the early bird gets the worm’ applies here. The earlier you purchase your trip tickets the less expensive your trip will be. Airlines, hotels, rental companies and tourism offices appreciate advanced notice. One of the ways they show their appreciation is by giving discounts to those who plan ahead.
4. Keep Cool with your Carry-on
As the price for checked luggage continues to climb, you might consider packing everything you need into a carry-on to avoid extra fees. Each airline may have different rules and regulations when it comes to carry-ons; it’s best to check the individual airline’s website for exact specifications. Remember that carry-ons MUST fit in the overhead storage bin: don’t make it too heavy because you have to be able to lift it over your head.
5. Do Your Research
I like to plan out my trip in advance to make sure I see everything I want to see (and eat everything I want to eat). A plethora of travel books are available to help you plan and execute the perfect vacation. Travel forums and websites are also a great way to get recommendations from locals and previous visitors.
I like to research local food, transportation, lodging, customs, and currency to avoid any pitfalls before boarding my plane. I’m not a fan of surprises and like to be prepared for whatever might come my way. I recommend setting a loose itinerary for your trip that includes your must-see destinations; make sure you schedule is flexible, though – you never know what you might see or whom you might meet!
6. Don’t Forget the Sunscreen
I know I promised a short list but I can’t stress enough how important sun protection is to a successful vacation! Nothing can ruin a trip faster than a scorching sunburn. Slather it on and slather often.
